Brakes don’t fail; lack of maintenance is the culprit
It’s a common reason given for a crash: “The brakes failed’. As the late Jack Webster would say: “Brakes only fail when you fail to maintain them.” FleetWatch has seen this on countless occasions during our many Brake & Tyre Watch projects.
The most common reason for discontinuing a rig is due to faulty brakes – and often – no brakes at all. Brake maintenance – especially on trailers – is one of the most ignored practices in the trucking industry. And now, after the Covid lockdowns, with trucking companies driving hard to recover lost income, it seems it remains an area of maintenance neglect.
FleetWatch has stopped at a number of recent breakdowns and on each – apart from the main reason for the breakdown – there are visible signs of brake maintenance neglect on the trailers.
FleetWatch has linked up with Wabco South Africa to impart greater awareness of braking systems on trucks and trailers and how to maintain them. As you will find out, it’s not rocket science.
