VRMED FSEMS Winburg, FSEMS RESCUE and Mangaung fire & rescue responded Tuesday night shortly after 19:00 to reports of a truck accident on the N1 20km south of Windburg by the Grootvet river bridge. On arrival, crews found that a truck had collided with a bridge after losing control causing the truck cab to sheer off and fall down the bridge. The cab of was found lying in the river embankment with some of the occupants still trapped inside.
Sadly one occupant sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased. 5 other occupants sustained moderate to severe injuries. VRMED advanced life support paramedic stabilized one patient with serious injuries while being extricated by FSEMS Rescue and MLM fire & Rescue using the jaws of life. The patient was transported to Pelonomi trauma unit with serious injuries. FSEMS transported 3 patients with moderate injuries to Windburg hospital for further care.
The remaining patient declined hospital transport. The Conditions rescue workers and first responders had to work in proved challenging: working down a steep river embankment in pitch darkness. Extra rescue equipment was used to safely extract the injured from down the embankment up to the roadside.
