In less than two hours after a truck was hijacked on the M17 Coega Road, Gqeberha’s Flying Squad members arrested one suspect and recovered the truck with its contents on Tuesday, 14 November 2023.
It is alleged that at about 13:13, the driver of a truck had stopped to check the refrigeration at the back when he was accosted by an unknown number of men who arrived in a bakkie and a white VW Golf. He was ordered to get into the VW Golf, however he managed to run away.
As soon as police received information about the hijacking, they picked up the faint tracker signal. Flying Squad members patrolled the area in search of the truck. At about 14:30, the truck was spotted in a street in NU12 in Motherwell. The suspects were busy offloading it and when they saw police, they scattered. One suspect was arrested inside the house.
All the stock containing dairy products (cheese, sauces and milk) valued at about R2,2 million were recovered.
The 40-year-old suspect is detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to appear in court soon. Police are on the hunt for the remaining suspects.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended the members for their swift reaction and recovery. ‘Truck hijackings are a serious concern in the NMB metro, and we appeal to the communities to report strange activities in their areas. Huge trucks parked in narrow residential streets, should raise suspicions and people should know that something is wrong. Police should be alerted. Buying or receiving stolen property is an offence and is punishable by law,’ warned Maj Gen Ncata.
