News reports suggest that there has been a significant increase in trucks on South Africa's roads recently as companies are unable to rely on the country's ailing railway network to transport goods. Roelie van Reenen, supply chain executive at Beefmaster Group, says this is a concerning trend impacting towns and agricultural communities. “We have seen first-hand how the increase in tipper trucks transporting commodities to ports is causing destruction of our road infrastructure,” says van Reenen. “I regularly drive the N12 between Christiana and Kimberley and I am not convinced that the road will be able to cope in the future.”
