With an annual contribution of 16.8million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) the road freight industry is second only to electricity production in terms of emission contributions. The nationwide lockdown in South Africa and its associated road travel bans have shown that massive reductions in emissions are possible, which can be continued post-lockdown if the industry is prepared to reconsider their transport strategies and begin the hard work of investigating and adopting the most suitable decarbonisation framework for their operations.
