Tonnes of donations make their way to the SA Army Combat Training Centre affected by devastating veld fire.
Almost ten (10) trucks will begin transporting donations to Combat Training Centre Lohatla affected by a devastating veld fire tomorrow, according to the General Manager of SA Army Foundation, Mr Angel Ramphela.
The fire, which reportedly started in Kathu, 56 km from Lohatla, but the fire changed direction and was moving quickly, driven by wind gusts of up to 70 km/h.
The SA Army Foundation donated 1,330 blankets, 1 330 mattresses, 1,330 stretchers and sixty-five (65) 16 ×16 to the South African National Defence Force tents, after a raging veld fire swept Combat Training Centre, Lohatla in Kathu under Gamagara Municipality Northern Cape, on Friday, 6 October 2023. About 1,300 personnel had lost shelter and personal belongings in the wake of the fire that claimed the lives of six soldiers and three others were seriously injured in the incident.
It was reported that the fire began mid-morning on Friday near the Khumani and Beeshoek mines in Katu. Strong winds and a heat wave exacerbated the fire and carried it to the base with a speed of up to 70 Km/h. The troops have been deployed in the area as part of the Vuk’Uhlome exercise. The General Manager of SA Army Foundation, Mr Angel Ramphela, added his name to the list of those expressing condolences and sympathies to families, friends and colleagues of the dead.
He said members of the Defence Force will always remain a priority to them, thanking the SA Army Foundation Barros for acting swiftly to procure hygiene packs, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, face cloths, hand towels, sanitary pads, mattresses, stretchers, blankets and tents.
According to Mr Ramphela, on Monday the sanitary towels were already in Lohatla and are to revive the living conditions of the soldiers. He said the trucks will start transporting these donations now followed by tonnes of donations according to the Head of Account, Mrs Roza as of tomorrow.
