Traffic officer injured in bizarre accident when speared by a rod ejected from a truck
Officer Misiwe Nongalo, stationed at Straundale Traffic Station in Gqeberha, had been part of our Festive Season operations. She was on a two-day family responsibility leave, traveling home to Whittlesea when she got involved in one of the most bizarre accidents imaginable.
The accident occurred on the R67 road between Makhanda and Fort Beaufort on Tuesday, 20th December. It is alleged that an iron rod got detached from a truck that was traveling the opposite direction. As the two vehicles were about to cross paths, the rod got detached from the truck, and like a spear – it flew off, piercing through her car windscreen and hit her on the upper body, knocking her unconscious.
Her 16-year-old son who was with her in the vehicle, managed to steer the vehicle away from a steep embankment and called for assistance.
Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha:
“We are grateful that Officer Nongalo’s life was spared from this very bizarre accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with her as she continues to receive medical attention in hospital.”
“We also wish to extend a word of comfort to the young man who got to witness that. We salute him for his bravery, for being able to steer the vehicle away from further harm and for calling for immediate assistance for his mother. This goes on to show how precious and how fragile life can be,” said MEC Nqatha.
