The Limpopo Provincial Visible Policing Task Team were conducting patrol duties along the N1 North public road under Makhado policing area when they spotted a suspicious white Toyota Hino truck with Mpumalanga province registration number on Thursday, 14 December 2023.
The truck was stopped, searched and found loaded with 12 mattresses. Police conducted an intensive search and subsequently discovered fifty 56 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes concealed underneath the mattress.
A 46-year-old male driver of the truck failed to provide the origin of the illicit cigarettes and was immediately arrested and charged with Contravention of Customs and Excise Act.
The truck and illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R1 420 320 were also confiscated during the arrest.
