MPUMALANGA – Jose Romao Sozinno (38) was found guilty and sentenced to15 years direct imprisonment by the Middelburg Regional Court on yesterday, 15 September 2020 for truck hijacking and armed robbery.
On 03 July 2012, the accused reportedly hijacked a company truck at Belfast four-way stop whereby the driver was pointed with a firearm and threatened to be shot at if he does not hand over the truck keys. The driver complied with their instructions. The accused drove off and along the way, the owner of the truck company who was traveling on the same route stopped the truck and managed to apprehend the accused. While in custody the accused was released on bail in 2017 and he evaded court appearances. A warrant of arrest was issued against him, he was circulated and published as a wanted suspect following which he was rearrested in March 2019 in Sebenza, Johannesburg area.
The accused remained in custody until he was found guilty on 09 September 2020 and sentenced on 15 September 2020 by the Middelburg Regional Court.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Mpumalanga has welcomed the sentence. The Provincial Head Major General Zodwa Mokoena applauded the investigation team, the Prosecution Authorities and Judiciary for a job well done. Major General Zodwa Mokoena concluded by warning criminals that their days are numbered.
