Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the Tongaat SAPS, and the Durban K9 Unit conducted an extensive search for two men who hijacked a Toyota Hino truck near the Umvoti Toll in KwaDukuza. – KZN.
Reaction Officers were dispatched to Saibs Drive in Maidstone – KZN after receiving reports of shots being fired. On arrival, it was established that an off-duty SAPS Offical opened fire on armed suspects who abandoned the hijacked truck and fled into a residential area. Reaction Officers and members of the Tongaat SAPS surround the area in an attempt to contain the suspects.
The RUSA Helicopter conducted an aerial search while the SAPS K9 Unit entered the dense vegetation with dogs. An extensive search was conducted however no arrests were made. A .38 special revolver and a signal jammer were recovered.
The driver of the truck informed Officers that his vehicle was loaded with a large quantity of alcohol. The occupants of a white Toyota Camry (registration unknown) forced him to stop on the highway. Two suspects entered the vehicle and instructed him to drive towards Tongaat – KZN. It could not be confirmed why they abandoned the vehicle.
The driver was not injured.
