An 8 ton truck was recovered in Bukane Street in Zwide by SAPS Flying Squad this morning at about 07:45 after it was hijacked at 04:00.
This follows after the truck was traveling on the R335 (Addo Road) and taking the N2 onramp (at Truckers’ Inn) towards Grahamstown, when a grey Toyota Corolla blocked the road. Two armed suspects forced the two truck assistants (25 and 30 years) off the truck at gunpoint into the Toyota Corolla.
The 55-year-old driver had to remain in the truck, and after a suspect got in with him, he was forced to drive to Coega Harbour turn off where another suspect got into the truck as well. The driver was then taken into the Toyota Corolla (with the two assistants) and driven to a bushy area near Addo Road.
Three suspects remained with them in the bushes for about two hours, after which they left them there. The driver and assistants then got help from passers-by on the Addo Road.
A hijacking case was opened at Swartkops police station. At about 07:45, the truck was discovered abandoned in Bukane Street, Zwide with the contents of the cargo removed. About R250 000 worth of beds were stolen.
